POSCO and Warszawska Wytwórnia Energii

We advised the Polish branch of the Korean firm POSCO Eco & Challenge Co., general contractor for the expansion and upgrading of the thermal waste treatment plant in Targówek.

Warszawska Wytwórnia Energii (WWE), a plant for thermal conversion of municipal waste in Warsaw’s Targówek district, is one of the largest and most modern facilities of its type in Europe. It can manage and convert into energy and heat over 260,000 tonnes of post-process waste (unrecyclable) and mixed municipal waste per year (a third of all municipal waste generated in Warsaw).

Integral elements of WWE include the waste sorter (for metals and plastics and for paper, with an annual capacity of 30,000 tonnes of waste), as well as an educational trail with a scenic overlook.

The facility meets all environmental standards and has a high-efficiency emissions scrubbing and monitoring system. The plant has been fully functioning since 15 December 2025, and the official opening was held on 19 February 2026.

The team advising POSCO included Mirella Lechna-Marchewka, Anna Prigan and Serom Kim (Infrastructure, Transport, Public Procurement & PPP practice) and Jakub Barański (Dispute Resolution & Arbitration practice).
